Question: Are Mormons Christians?
One of the most common accusations that Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) contend with is the misconception that we are not Christians. "So," you ask, "are Mormons Christians?"
Answer: Yes, Latter-day Saints, (also known as Mormons) are Christians.
Speaking on this topic, President Ezra Taft Benson stated:
"The question is sometimes asked, Are Mormons Christians? We declare the divinity of Jesus Christ. We look to Him as the only source of our salvation. We strive to live His teachings, and we look forward to the time when He shall come again on this earth to rule and reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.
"In the words of a Book of Mormon prophet, we say to men today, 'There shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.' (Mosiah 3:17.)"
On January 1, 2000, the First Presidency released a document titled "THE LIVING CHRIST: The Testimony of the Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." The testimony bears witness of the reality of Jesus Christ and is signed by each member of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. It alone is a great witness to the world that Latter-day Saints do indeed believe in Jesus Christ.
As Nephi, from The Book of Mormon, stated:
"...we are made alive in Christ because of our faith; yet we keep the law because of the commandments.
"And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins" (2 Nephi 25:25-26.)
So why would people accuse Latter-day Saints of not being Christian? Apparently it has little to do with whether or not we believe in Christ and more to do with what we believe about Christ.
